Flying drones safely

⏱ 12 min

Drones (unmanned aircraft systems, UAS) share the sky with real aircraft. In Malaysia they are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM). Rules change, so always check the latest CAAM requirements (registration, permits and no-fly zones) before you fly.

Good practice for every flight

  • Keep the drone in visual line of sight at all times.
  • Stay low — commonly no higher than 400 ft (about 120 m) above the ground unless permitted.
  • Keep well away from airports, helipads and approach paths, military areas and government buildings.
  • Do not fly over crowds, roads with traffic, or people who are not part of your activity.
  • Respect privacy — do not photograph people or homes without permission.
  • Check weather, battery, propellers and compass calibration before take-off.
  • Give way to every manned aircraft — land immediately if one approaches.

Air Scouts can earn trust by being the best-behaved drone pilots around!
